Mountains high and valleys low

“Mountains high and valleys low” is part of a series of paintings inspired the notion of significance, special places, people, moments, and times that remind me of what is real and important in my life. This abstract landscape is created full of layers of texture, depth and colour, reflecting the diverse and abundant life found in the beautiful mountains of the Western Cape. Time spent in nature can change us in unexpected ways, providing moments of connection, of finding peace, moments of gratitude and awe, of just being. As I paint there is a constant dance as I work up close on the detail and then step away, over and over again, to get multiple perspectives; in the same way when looking at the painting as a whole one is drawn into the detail, the layers, the texture, the colours, and then back to the whole, or on to a different area with its own unique layers, colours, shades and depth.
